Behaviour, Ecology & evolution

Ever since I was an undergraduate student at the University of Utrecht, I have been absolutely fascinated by the study of animal behaviour. How do animals interact with their environment and what cognitive and physiological mechanism facilitate these behaviours. Throughout my education, more specific research interests converged around sociality and it’s adaptive and flexible nature. Studying this topic, I prefer using a multi-tiered approach, integrating ultimate drivers and proximate mechanism. I am convinced this approach leads to the deepest understanding of the subject matter.

I like to use various practical techniques, such as: behavioural observation, social network analysis, experimental setups, genetic analysis, hormone analysis and non-invasive technologies (GPS & proximity collars). Different questions require different techniques and I like to be well-versed in the latest. I am also a big proponent of interdiciplinary collaboration as I believe it broadens the practical skillset and provides new perspectives, minimizing dogmatic thinking.

Photography

Throughout my travels I have developed a passion for capturing the beauty of natural world. The patience of photographing an animal in its natural habitat complements the skillset required for behavioural research.
